Freeing the Creative Process

Saturday, December 7, 2019 1:00 - 2:30 PM

Details

Panel presentation of various clinical and theoretical considerations to writing.

This panel examines, through case study, theories and personal experience, how the creative process is freed and what interferes with that freedom. It explores questions such as: why do we hold creative impulses in check? Why are writing and painting and other artistic expressions held apart from real life? What is the meaning of originality? What does it take to finish a creative work? Discussion will be relevant to writers, artists, and students of any creative process, including research and analytic dissertations.

Panel:

Janet Pocorobba earned her M.A. in Psychoanalytic Counseling from the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis in 2012. She has worked in private practice and in an opioid clinic in Montpelier, VT. She also holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Lesley University and is an Associate Professor of Creative Writing, as well as Associate Director, of their MFA Program in Creative Writing. She is the author of The Fourth String: A Memoir of Sensei and Me (Stone Bridge Press: 2019), and uses her analytic skills to help others finish writing projects through her book coaching service, The Book Whisperer. Mara Sanadi Wagner, Psy.D., Cert.Psya. is on the faculty of BGSP, serving currently as the director of outreach.  She teaches courses that focus on the unconscious sources of creative expression such as dreams, fantasy, film, art, and literature. She founded a gallery within the school as a way to bring artists and psychoanalysts together and managed many exhibitions, eventually acquiring our permanent collection which hangs today.  Now a practicing painter, collagist and stitcher, you can see her work on Instagram @aberdeentreehousestudio.  Visit our blog to read her analyses of films such as Birdman and The English Patient.

Moderator, Jane Snyder, Ph.D., Cert.Psya. is the President of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis where she is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst.  She also has extensive experience in the Research Department at BGSP where she taught the Dissertation Research class for many years and she has chaired numerous research dissertations, helping students resolve resistances to  writing and finishing their projects while enhancing their psychoanalytic understanding and clinical work.

Continuing Education Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss how the capacity to fantasize may enhance a person’s ability to write.
  2. Discuss the elements of a personal analysis, especially the phenomenon of how resistance is resolved to open up the ability to write or create.
  3. Discuss how resolving resistances to create may effect other examples of creativity.
